Jalen Hamilton’s debut poetry collection, A Darker Mine, is a coming of age story that aims to elucidate connections between the mental health challenges and lived experiences of African American males. Hamilton uses each poem as therapy to tell stories of birth, death, self, love, youth, and resilience. His poems give breath to the transference of emotional and generational narratives, while examining cultural and historical events as a method for providing perspective. Hamilton identifies similarities among a range of black figures and occurrences, to illustrate an existing community intertwined by faith, responsibility and healing.
